Commencement FAQs
  1. When should I arrive? Students and families should head over to our diploma ceremony site directly from the larger University Commencement Ceremony. Graduating students will be seated in alphabetical order at the front near the stage and should find the check-in table when they arrive to receive their seat numbers. Students and family members who do not attend the morning ceremony are welcome to arrive at our diploma ceremony site starting at 11 am.
  2. Is seating assigned for the department ceremony? No. The Economics diploma ceremony has open seating (first-come, first-served), and guests will not need to purchase tickets to attend.
  3. Will food and drinks be provided? Yes. Graduates and their family/friends are welcome to enjoy light appetizers and refreshments before the start of the event.
  4. Where is the Economics Department Ceremony located? The department ceremony will be held on the lawn in front of Hoover Tower (link to Map and more details). The tower will be closed during our ceremony, including bathrooms.
  5. Is there a dress code for the event?: Graduates are required to wear their Stanford Regalia to the event over comfortable clothes. There is no dress code for guests, but we suggest wearing comfortable attire as it may be hot on the day of the ceremony.
  6. I am conferring multiple degrees. Can I walk in both department ceremonies? Ceremonies for each department are staggered in time and located at many different points on campus. Please check the ceremony times and locations for both degrees. The Economics ceremony will begin promptly at 12:30 pm and graduates wishing to participate should be checked in and seated by 12:15 pm. Late arrivals will not be permitted to walk.
  7. I am not conferring my degree in Spring 2024. Can I still walk at the Economics Department Ceremony? Students conferring their degrees in Fall 2023, Winter 2024, Spring 2024, Summer 2024, or Fall 2024 may participate in the Economics Department Ceremony. If you plan to attend, please complete the walkthrough petition included in our RSVP Form. For questions about eligibility for the University-wide commencement ceremony, please visit the Stanford Commencement Page.
  8. I cannot attend the Department Commencement Ceremony. Will I still receive my diploma? Yes! Diplomas are sent by mail to graduates once their degree conferral is approved. Please visit the Student Services Diploma Page for more information.
  9. How do I order photos taken at the ceremony? Graduating students will have the opportunity to submit contact information for GradImages in the department RSVP form.
  10. Is it ok for my family to take photos at graduation? Yes, we just ask that you do not stand in front of anyone or come too close to the stage. Specifically, Stanford policy allows personal filming and photography by individuals on campus so long as:
    1. Lights, tripods, and other standing equipment are not used.
    2. The images are used exclusively for personal, non-commercial purposes (i.e., filming and photography on campus for commercial purposes is prohibited).
    3. They do not interfere with the operations of the university, or the privacy of individuals on campus, and the taking of such photos is consistent with University policies.

You can find the Stanford photography and filming policies here.
