STUDENT RESOURCES

Financial Support $$$

In recent years more than half of the first-year students have received a full fellowship which includes tuition; this is awarded on the basis of merit. The Department is usually able to support all qualified second, third, and fourth-year students with teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and occasional fellowships. In addition, many of those who remain for a fifth year are employed as teaching assistants and research assistants. Summer employment as TAs and RAs is widely available, though it is not guaranteed. While we cannot make a binding promise to continue this level of support, we will make every effort to do so in the future. Assistantship stipend rates for 1998-99 are $4,573 per quarter, plus tuition coverage. Students in the Department have also been successful in obtaining generous outside fellowships. In recent years Stanford students have received NSF, Sloan, Mellon, Bradley, and Olin Fellowships.

Libraries

Stanford University's library system has few equals anywhere in the world. Its journal, book, and government document collections are absolutely comprehensive. Graduate students in economics can use the Green Library, which carries all major journals in economics, a huge collection of books, and an official US government document repository. Reserve materials for graduate courses are in Meyer Library. In addition, graduate students have access to the Business School's Jackson Library, which also has a complete journal collection and many books. Jackson houses a complete collection of business and financial information; for example, it has every 10K statement ever filed by a corporation in the United States. Jackson's journal collection is non circulating, which means that you can always find the article you are looking for.

Computer Facilities

Workstations: The Department has access to a large network of Unix workstations. The computers on this network support a wide range of computing software (SAS, TSP., etc.), as well as several electronic mail systems. Students can access these facilities from any WAN (a wide area network) link in the Department, on campus, or from modem links.

Microcomputers: There is a computing lab in the Department which contains many PCs and several Unix workstations, as well as printing facilities. These computers are connected to the Department's local area network and to Stanford's WAN. Students may obtain daytime and after hours access to these labs. Teaching Skills

All students fulfill a one quarter paid Teaching Assistant requirement. They are provided the opportunity to improve their teaching skills, with the assistance of a TA coordinator, through several avenues: the Linguistics Department offers course work for foreign TAs, and the Stanford Center for Teaching and Learning offers consultation, evaluation, and training (including videotaping).
